The betel leaf or paan leaf plant is a beautiful, aromatic tropical vine prized for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves and fast, climbing growth habit. Native to South and Southeast Asia, this perennial plant grows as a trailing or climbing vine, using nearby supports such as trellises, poles, or fences to reach 6–10 feet or more in warm conditions.
Betel leaf thrives in warm, humid environments with bright, indirect light. It prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter, but should never sit in standing water. Regular watering and high humidity are key to healthy growth; the plant performs especially well in greenhouses, shaded patios, or indoors near a sunny window with added humidity.
This plant is frost-sensitive and should be protected from temperatures below 32°F. With the right care—warmth, moisture, gentle light, and support to climb—betel leaf grows vigorously and can be harvested regularly, encouraging even fuller growth over time.
California gardeners can grow betel leaf with winter protection. Outside of Zone 10, grow in a pot and move indoors for the winter or grow in a greenhouse. The betel leaf plant adds lush greenery and cultural significance to any plant collection.
